I spent 15 years in the school photography industry, and it was never only photography. We were also a printing press and a planning consultant. We ran registration day. We made and distributed ID cards, name cards for graduation, prom tickets and the materials around them, class materials for elementary schools, bookmarks, coloring sheets, on and on, all year, every year. That work put me inside the process, and what I saw directly, over and over, was the pain teachers had with doing everything that is not teaching.

I also have family members who teach, and I have watched that same frustration up close. The hardest part is never writing the plan. It’s changing it. An assembly gets announced Tuesday morning. A fire drill eats twenty minutes of the block you needed. A field trip, a minimum day, picture day, a schedule you have to build around months in advance and rebuild the week of. Every one of those means going back through the whole day and shifting things, and doing it again the next time.
